Diadynamotherapy engages direct currents with 50 and 100 Hz semi-sinusoidal pulses for medicinal purposes. Generally, two types of diadynamic currents are used: continuous single-phase and continuous two-phase, as well as different modulations and combinations of these currents – interrupted rhythmic current, modulated by short or long periods, etc.. Being direct currents, they are exposed to strong epidermal resistance and, primarily, cause excitation of exteroreceptors, which is manifested by burning and pricking sensation under the electrodes, as well as hyperemia appearance due to enlargement of surface vessels and accelerated blood circulation. Increasing the current strength causes rhythmic excitation of nerves and muscular fibers. This leads to activation of peripheral blood circulation, increased metabolism, pain relief in the application area, which is generally used when treating diseases of peripheral nervous system and musculoskeletal system. Further increase of current strength effect tetanic contraction of muscles.
The major specifics of diadynamic current activity lie in blocking sensitive nerve endings and increase the related pain sensibility level almost up to full anesthesia, as well as in stimulation of trophic processes, tissue metabolism and perineural edema resolution. Diadynamic currents normalize cortical neurodynamics by reflex exposure on peripheral section of pain analyzers; reflex arch rupture in pathological pulsation is of major importance in this process. Due to vegetative formations irritation, peripheral vessels are enlarged, trophic and blood supply of tissues is improved, ion concentration and membrane permeability is changed. All this benefits to edema healing and disturbed functions normalization.
Indications for use of diadynamotherapy is rather expansive. These are: acute pain syndromes in lesions of peripheral nervous system (neurological manifestations of spine osteochondrosis, neuralgia, mono-and polyneuropathy, ganglionitis, plexites), diseases and injuries of musculoskeletal system (myositis, periarthritis, epicondylitis, arthritis, post-injury and post-operative stiffness in the joints, etc.); diseases of the digestive system (gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcers, colitis, dyskinesia of the biliary tract, pancreatitis, dumping syndrome) and breathing (prolonged pneumonia, bronchial asthma), chronic inflammatory disease of the uterus, algomenorrhea, delay and urinary incontinence, enuresis; impotence, prostatitis, the initial stage of hypertension and obliterating vascular diseases of extremities, headache, angioedema, diseases of upper respiratory tract (laryngitis, otitis, sinusitis, rhinitis, vocal cord paresis), TMJ arthritis, periodonthosis, itchy dermatitis, keloid scars, etc..
